Your website runs into an error, and when you call the agency that built it, nobody answers. Or a project stalls halfway and the vendor “pauses” and never comes back. Many small and medium-sized businesses have been there. The good news: in most cases the website can still be saved if you handle things in the right order.

Step 1: Regain control

Before thinking about fixes, make sure your business actually holds what belongs to it:

  • Domain name: check whose name it is registered under, with which registrar, and when it expires.
  • Hosting / server: the hosting account, who pays for it and how long the plan has left.
  • Website admin account: the highest-privilege account must belong to your business, not only to the developer.
  • Source code and data: request a full backup of the source code and database.

If the domain or hosting is registered under your previous vendor’s name, transfer it to your business as soon as possible.

Step 2: Assess the current state

An abandoned website often has hidden problems: outdated software and plugins, unpatched security holes, malware, slow loading or broken SEO settings. An assessment tells you how healthy the website really is before you decide what to do next.

Step 3: Fix it or rebuild?

Not every website needs to be rebuilt from scratch. If the platform is sound, the structure is reasonable and only some parts are missing, continuing development is usually far cheaper. If the website runs on an outdated platform, is heavily infected or no longer fits how your business operates, a rebuild may be the right call. The decision should be based on a technical assessment, not on gut feeling.

Step 4: Choose a new partner, and avoid repeating the problem

When working with a new provider, ask clearly from the start:

  • Will the source code, admin accounts, domain and hosting be fully handed over to your business?
  • How long is the warranty, and what does it cover?
  • After handover, who supports you when something goes wrong?

These answers belong in the contract, not just in promises.
